Indoor/outdoor falls different in elderly

Nearly 40 percent of seniors fall each year and at least half of the falls occur outdoors, but indoor and outdoor falls are different, U.S. researchers say.
“Indoor and outdoor falls are both important,” senior author Marian T. Hannan, a senior scientist at the Institute for Aging Research, said. “But people at high risk for indoor falls are different in many ways from those at high risk of outdoor falls. Failure to separate the two can mask important information on risk factors and may hamper the effectiveness of falls prevention programs.”
The study, published online in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, finds indoor falls are associated with an inactive lifestyle, disability and poor health, while outdoor falls are associated with higher levels of activity and average or better-than-average health.

A survey of Travel and Leisure readers ranked New York area airports, including New Jersey’s Newark International Liberty Airport, as the worst in the nation, according to Yahoo Travel.
The results come from the magazine’s latest America’s Favorite Cities survey, where readers rated 30 U.S. cities on a variety of topics, including food, shopping, on-time performance, and the efficiency of airport employees, according to the report. The New York area airports ranked last for food, entertainment, on-time performance, and staff efficiency, the report said.

Many vacationers opt to rent a home in their vacation destination rather than staying in a hotel. For these vacationers, this is a worthwhile option because it gives the vacationer a more comfortable place to stay with features such as cooking facilities which are not typically offered in commercial hotels.
Finding these vacation rentals can be significantly more difficult than simply making hotel reservations but many vacationers report this to be a worthwhile effort. However, some care should be taken when renting a vacation home to ensure the quality of the home meets the expectations of the vacationers. Finding a vacation rental property can obviously be much more difficult than simply renting a hotel during the vacation. Practice Before You Go. A key to viewing wildlife, and especially birds, is to have the ability to very quickly put your binoculars on target. Many people have difficulty finding a full moon in a pair of binoculars-but alas-learning to focus on a bird in a bush or track a bird in flight is easy for someone who has practiced prior to their outing. Try this before you go; lower your binoculars to your side and very quickly raise them to find and follow a jet airliner across the sky. After only a few attempts, you’ll get good at quickly acquiring your target. Quite often, birds are visible for only a few seconds, practice to become proficient.
Take Someone with You. Life is always better when shared. Not only do you get to spend time out of doors with someone you like, but they might alert you to the Number One Sight of the Day. Share your birding experiences with your friends and family. Pass the birding excitement to a child.
The best part about wildlife viewing is that you the viewer, control almost every aspect of the experience. The more you are prepared, the more rewarding your time in our backcountry will be.

Some people tend to scoff at the ideas of freebies, and that is all well and good. Those people are perfectly willing to pay over inflated prices for their entertainment while I hope you will be wise enough to choose entertainment that doesn’t come with quite as much sting. Believe me when I say, you do not always get what you pay for and the cliches are correct. You will probably find that many of the best things you find in Seattle are absolutely free.
The first great place I’m going to tell you about is one of those absolutely free places to visit. Not only is it great fun but it is educational as well. I sincerely hope that you will not let the price tag prevent you from the knowledge and good old-fashioned fun you can have at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks. There is much to do during your trip to the locks. A few great suggestions would be to walk in the gardens, watch the boats, visit the fish ladder (little ones will find this completely fascinating), and exploring the many exhibits in the area.
